Confederate History Week proclamation
Here is the text of the Confederate History Week proclamation by County Commissioner Jim Puckett, a Republican. The board approved this in a 6-3 vote Tuesday.

PROCLAMATION

Confederate History Week

WHEREAS, when we recall what took place during the War Between the States, we should do so in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the conflicting ideals and passions that pitted brother against brother and tore a nation apart; and WHEREAS, the common soldiers and sailors of both sides should be respected for their courage and sacrifices, because they were all Americans; and WHEREAS, for the most part, soldiers on both sides of that terrible conflict, including thousands of African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics in the Southern armies, served for the same reason Americans have served in all our country's wars - their country was at war, and it was their duty to serve; and WHEREAS, we should continue to move forward in our efforts to respect everyone's heritage, values, and beliefs regardless of their race, ethnic background or whatever area of our nation they come from; and WHEREAS, we can use the experience of our past to build a better future for our country. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners does hereby proclaim the Week of May 7 - 13, 2006 CONFEDERATE HISTORY WEEK in Mecklenburg County and urges all our citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made, the lessons learned and the duty and dedication of all those involved.

This proclamation is based on the address, Honor Answering Honor by Robert G. McLendon, Jr.

This the 3rd day of May 2006

H. Parks Helms, Chairman

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners
